Air Pollution From Ships

Hulda Winnes from the Department of Shipping and Marine Technology at Chalmers conducts research in air pollution from ships. The thesis is based on emission measurements and different kinds of environmental impact assessments. It is important to see the whole cause-effect chain, and to know the environmental consequences of, in this case, marine transport.

Particularly emissions of particles are studied. These pollutants are known to be health risks. It is known that ships’ emissions of particles are high but for certain operational stages the uncertainties are high. Her studies include emission measurements on ships in port areas which are often close to where people live.

Hulda Winnes started her PhD studies in 2001 and has had three children during this period. Before her PhD, she achieved a Fil MAG in Environmental Sciences from University of Gothenburg, from where she graduated in 1999. She has also worked at Volvo Logistics and spent one year in the Middle East.
