The goals of Lighthouse in 10 years time
Lighthouse will have contributed to the build up of an internationally attractive research and innovation environment, which substantially have strengthened the Swedish Shipping Industries international competitiveness and innovativeness.
Strategy
To strengthen the Swedish Shipping Industries international competitiveness and innovativeness we have decided to work at three levels:
– A project organization consisting of a scientific board, skippers responsible for Theme areas, and a management board, which will all actively safeguard research ideas and turn these into actual financed projects.
– A physical environment of premises and simulators will be a common meeting ground where scientists from different disciplines can come together and contribute to each others research.
– A clear co-operation between Industry – Academy – Society through active reference groups connected to the Theme areas of Lighthouse:

• Cargo Ship
• Business Ship
Goal
Lighthouse will show concrete research results and stimulate a more effective usage of research and development activities.
Strategy
Assessment of project ideas will always be according to predefined criteria as well as through continuous evaluation of the projects. This will be the responsibility of the Lighthouse scientific board.

Lighthouse will have established a leading graduate program with access to established world renowned scientists.
Strategy
Lighthouse have founded a network consisting of four graduate programs at Chalmers University of Technology and the School of Business, Economics and Law at Göteborg University.
The network brings senior competence within the following nine areas together:
• Maritime environment
• Finance within the areas of Business Administration, Economical Geography and Economics
• Hydromechanics
• Ship Design and Engineering
• Sea-going qualities
• System engineering
• Human Factors
• Ship Operation and Safety
• Law of the Sea
Goal
Lighthouse will have developed into an attractive base for recruitment for the shipping industry, academic departments as well as other stakeholders.
Strategy
Scientists connected to Lighthouse will work in an interdisciplinary environment closely connected to the industry. New PhDs will thereby have a thorough knowledge about the shipping industry as well as a working network of connections within the industry, which creates an attractive recruitment base.
Goal
Lighthouse will be the centre of an international network, with well developed strategic collaborations and links to leading actors within research and development.
Strategy
The fact that scientists connected to Lighthouse actively use this centre of competence to bring scientists and other interested parties from around the world together, will make us the natural centre of international network.

By a long term increase of investments in the research and development activities from the participating parties, an increased number of national and international supporters and through a clear plan for how the forthcoming work with EU applications will be established, the financial base of Lighthouse will be strengthened.
