First call in the Swedish Energy Agency's shipping programme

The Swedish Energy Agency announces a funding call worth approximately SEK 15 million for research, innovation and demonstration projects that will contribute to the development of a sustainable maritime transport system.

It is the first call in the shipping program launched by the Swedish Energy Agency this year. The program runs over six years and has a total budget of 83 million SEK. The call and the program are aimed at projects that address one or more of the following areas:

  • Energy-efficient vessels - Actions in the area may apply to measures to reduce both the fossil fuel consumption of ships for propulsion and for internal systems. Various types of measures to improve internal operations through automation, digitization, changed behaviors / working methods, or improved processes can also be included in the program.
  • Adaptation to renewable energy - This may apply to the adaptation of drive and auxiliary systems for operation with renewable fuels. Electricity is also included in this category.
  • Operations and systems - Examples of operational measures include increased capacity utilization on board, reduced speed, route planning and efficient driving methods as well as business models between shipping companies and cargo owners.

Based on renewable fuels
As a sustainable maritime transport system, the Swedish Energy Agency considers an energy and resource efficient maritime transport system based entirely on renewable fuels. Project proposals with a focus on social sciences and humanities as well as engineering and science as well as interdisciplinary project proposals are welcome in the announcement.

The closing date for the first announcement is 4 September 2018 at 23.59.
More information about the announcement can be found on the Swedish Energy Agency website.
