MUNIN: unmanned ships is a collaborative research project, co-funded by the European Commission under its Seventh Framework Programme. MUNIN aims to develop and verify a concept for an autonomous ship, which is defined as a vessel primarily guided by automated on-board decision systems but controlled by a remote operator in a shore side control station.

Autonomous and unmanned vessels are seen as a key element for a competitive and sustainable European shipping industry in the future. The research project MUNIN will contribute to the realization of the vision of autonomous and unmanned vessels by developing and verifying a concept for the autonomous ship. The MUNIN consortium consists of eight partners with both scientific and industrial backgrounds located in Germany, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Ireland and is financed by the EU.
