Cargo Ship

Cargo ShipCargo Ship was led by Professor Jonas Ringsberg and focused on the ship as a cargo carrier/transporter. Joint research projects study, analyze and develop effective and innovative carrier systems, but also including interaction with ports and other parts of the logistics chain. The research projects focused on systems, sea going qualities, ship design and engineering, arrangements on board as well as loading and unloading. Example of Cargo Ship projects are BESST and S-LÄSS.

Research topics

Cargo Ship core activity and research currently collaborates closely with the division of Ship Design at the Department of Shipping and Marine Technology at Chalmers  University of Technology. Today, three research groups within the division of Ship 
Design actively contribute to the Lighthouse project and the Theme area Cargo Ship, both in education and research.

Marine Structural Engineering

The group “Marine Structural Engineering” engages in method development and evaluates ships and floating off-shore structures in regard to structural strength, collision resistance, lightweight structure and fatigue life. Practical applications of the research results contribute to safer shipping, increased structural life and lower maintenance costs. One senior scientist and two PhD students in the research group are financed by Lighthouse.


The group “Seakeeping” studies ship stability, motions and maneuvering in calm water and rough sea, which are fundamental areas for ship design and ship and cargo  handling. The research focus is on developing analytical methods to predict ship 
stability, motions and maneuvering in rough seas, for both intact and damaged ships. The analytical methods developed will be used to predict seakeeping qualities of ships, i.e. motions, speed and acceleration, in order to assess safety and comfort for the crew and passengers. One senior scientist and two PhD students in this research group are 
financed by Lighthouse.

Marine Transport Systems

The group “Marine Transport Systems” is based on Systems Engineering and works with method development for the design of sea transport with a long-term customer demand perspective. This is a design problem for ships and cargo handling equipment, where techniques for product and system development, based on engineering methodology, are the theoretical basis. The group also deals with cargo handling and operates a simulator for the simulation of loading and unloading of cargo: “Cargo Operations Studio” (COS). The goal for Cargo Ship during 2008 is to establish more active research collaborations with the School of Business, Economics and Law at University of Gothenburg in the three ongoing PhD projects financed by Lighthouse. Research results will be reported and distributed as conference proceedings and peer reviewed journal papers. Course improvement and the implementation of new training courses in COS will start during the fall of 2008.
Increased survival of damaged ships is mainly about buoyancy and improved bulkheads in the next generation of ships. These questions are dealt with by the action group Surship within ERANET, where Sweden and Chalmers University of Technology are very active. The division Ship Design runs the research project HASARD which covers structure and buoyancy in relation to ship collisions.
